Golden Ridge Farm Excursion

Last Wednesday, kindergarten had thier first excursion to the farm ! Mrs Berg and I had some very excited children who were awake bright and early and ready for an adventurous day !

On the bus we talked about the kinds of things we might see and do at the farm. Have a listen to Isobel, Emma, Maia and Cooper who share thier thoughts on the day ahead !

When we arrived we had some lunch to prepare us for the energy we would need learning about how a farmer needs to take care of all his animals.

After our lunch we were taken into the big barn shed to meet some of the animals at Golden Ridge Farm. We held ducklings, chickens and rabbits and some of the animals were only three days old !

Once we had experiecned the smaller animals it was time to meet the bigger farm animals ! We couldn't wait to find aout about thier shelter and what they ate and where they slept. We really enjoyed feeding the sheep and goats some bread, even if we were a little scared when they licked our fingers !

We also learnt about how milk gets from a cow to our fridge !! Even Mrs. Berg had a go at milking the cow ! We were so amazed at how many products actually came from a cow ! Have a listen to what we learnt...
We finished off the day with feeding some milk to some baby goats (which we learnt are called kids!). We had such an enjoyable day and learnt so much about the different environments farm animals live in. We learnt about their needs and what they provide us. We even got to ask some of our own questions at the end of the day, have a listen to a few !

A big thank you to our parent helpers on the day and to Golden Ridge Farm for providing us with a fantastic hands on experience with animals !!!

Learning about animals !

This term we are learning about all the different animals that we can find in our environment, how they are the same and different and how we can help them and how do they help us. So far we have written a list of the types of things we want to know about animals. Today we learnt that we can use lots of things to help us learn about animals like books, the internet and DVD's. Stay tuned to see what we find out !

Maths Fun Day !

Yesterday Kindergarten participated in a whole school maths fun day ! The children were put into different groups with children from all grades. From there, the groups rotated around 10 activities that combined physical activity and mathematical thinking. The children had a great time during their own St Joseph's amazing race as groups collected letters at the completion of every activity in which they had to put together to make a sentence at the end. Groups made sentences like Maths is magic!, Maths is awesome! and Maths is marvelous. At the end of the day the children were treated to an iceblock for their wonderful participation and enthusiasm for the day.

Some of the favourite activities included, Count how many sit ups you can do in a minute, making tangram pictures, using paddlepop sticks to create a design and then solving a problem, listening to properties of shapes and working together using elastic to create the shape and making paper areoplanes, flying them and measuring how far they travelled.
